At RHS Malvern in 2025, the garden paths used crushed whelk shell aggregate, a by-product of the Welsh fishing industry. The reclaimed shells offered a natural alternative to conventional gravel. The use of whelk shells in the garden not only supports sustainability but also enhances the sensory experience. The unique texture and sound of the shells underfoot add a soothing element to the labyrinth and pathways, while also promoting a dialogue about waste reduction and resourcefulness in garden design.
